An update...

The Bridge Run:

9,844 runners in this event.

I am sooooooo average:
Overall I placed 4,212th.
Let me just state that again, Four Thousand two hundred and twelfth!
*sigh* I so wish I was "good" at something, not just average.

I was the 2,394th male to cross the line.
And, finished 860th in the male 30-39 category.

Oh boy, have I got some work to do. . .

Dave, I'm so sorry, but it's not all about "just participating"... I would love/have a strong desire to be better than average.

Ok, I just did some further analysis of the results and based on my time I came 3,699th. So, out of close to 10,000 runners, I can be satisified with that result.

4,500th would be average (well, assuming an even distribution, but not wanting to be nerdy!).... so 4,212th is above average!

And when you consider the millions of lazy bastards who stayed in bed, very much better than average I'd have thought!

You've gone and edited the number on me... so... that's even better... 4,922nd would be the middle of the pack!

You are not average.. you ride bikes at high speeds and climb mountains AND make us British boys go weak at the knees....

cutectguy: I guess my sentiment was more along the lines that I think it would be a great feeling to be considered really good by your peers and have acknowledgement for that. I'm still happy with my race and my time, there's just this little part of me that always wants to do better... in what ever I do.

Oooo.. I just did the final percentage figures and I'm in the Top 38%.

The fact you entered is reason enough to congratulate! Out of approx 4.3 million people (Sydney) you were one of 9,844 people who got off their ass & participated. That figure is astounding don't you think? So congratulations & well done for taking the challenge. 99.77% of Sydney's population missed it so that puts you in the Top 1% Cheers all round!

Thanks for the link Tom!!! :-) Muz, you are better than average, in fact, you're top of the class in terms of providing inspiration for those of us "lazy bastards"! And as CuteCTGuy said, you provide inspiration of the other kind for countless of us bloggers! ;-)

Aren't you a vulnerable person. :)

Oh Geez... Maybe you just don't get it. If you don't feel it within yourself, then good on you. I on the other hand seem to want to do better and challenge myself.

It's not about feeling sorry for myself. It's about a desire to do better. I feel like I'm constantly wading around in my own mediocrity. Once I would have been satisfied with that. But now, without that desire to do better, I doubt I would even bother attempting to do half of what I enjoy doing. There still is that fact - I actually do ENJOY what I do. I had one of the best times on Sunday. But, my desire to want to be better than average is what I’m going to use to motivate me.

I'm hardly inspiration to anyone who is lazy and if wanting the satisfaction of being recognised for "doing well" makes me a vulnerable individual then so be it.

ooooo... Someone's getting angry.

Give yourself a break Mr.
You're feelings of mediocracy may be someone else's feelings of achievement.

True...

But this is my blog so forgive me if my posts are from my point of view.

Muzbot, don't get cranky. I like your blog and your posts. I'm just giving you a different point of view. I actually think I'm good at everything I do.

I get it Muzbot. It's a good thing to want to better and chalenge yourself. At least you don't complain about your life and you do get out there and give things a go. So, that is admirable.

I sometimes want to be a better mum. If I didn't try to improve then I'm not only letting myself down, but also my kids. So I truely understand those feelings. We just want to achieve different things. :)

Hey Muz,

i would say that top 38% is definately above the average. I'm thinking most of your readers also think youre a well above average man.

Besides, you dont want to be perfect just yet, what would you have to strive for then ?

Monty said...

Muz, that's the thing...you're inspiring because even when you achieve a goal, you want to go one better! You set high standards for yourself and then get out there and give it a go!

grats Muz!

hey Muz = I think you did really well given I gather you only started this running caper recently.

and I think it is great you want to be better than merely average.

Ok.. I did the Nike 10km run in 47 minutes... so thats what you got to beat. :-)

congratulations!! and i think i understand, mediocraty to me does not equate to bad, rather, for me it's a platform or benchmark i reassess and set more personal goals from

Muz, champions never stop wanting to achieve their goals and when they get there, they set higher goals. Good on ya for wanting to go the distance. You're a champ!

good on you Muz for getting out there and PUSHING - I don't think we were put on this planet just to "get by" or drift.

Well done, Muzbot.

I have some catching up to do if we are doing Aroc.

seymour said...

The better runner you are, the faster you can get away from me. More cake I say.

Darth Gateau said...

Wow! Raging debate. OK. If you feel that you need to achieve more - what's your next goal? Further? Faster? Both?
You seem like the kind of person who makes a commitment to his goals - I'm often distracted by food or shiny stuff so it's commendable you stick with your aims. However, I think I know what you're getting at about wanting to do better.

do you ever read you blog posts out loud to yourself? i like to do this sometimes... its an interesting feeling

KPB said...

oh dude, I hear ya loud and clear.

not that i'm competitive at all

But often sometimes I found you are also looking for attention. Attentions that make yourself feeling good, make yourself important to know that someone out there do care. But then, isn't that called "vulnerable"?

Muzbot said...

I make no secret or have shame in seeking attention. That is what this post was all about. I chose to call "attention" - "recognition". I seek it at work, I seek it with my graphic design and I'd like to have it for my recreational activities. In seeking this I also leave myself open to criticism. But criticism is something that anyone who chooses to put themselves out there must be able to cop sweet on the chin. How a person deals with that recognition is what makes them vulnerable – or not. My harshest criticism comes from within.

Anybody who knows me personally knows the extent to which I seek attention. To be recognised by my peers and friends for quality and consistency (in all areas of my life that I can affect – ie: not face value attributes) is a strong desire for me. It motivates me. It’s a good feeling to take part in events and activities; however, I believe that recognition plays a part in a person's drive.

And yes, for me, especially with how I feel about myself, it is important to know that someone out there cares.

Monty said...

Well, Muz, there's plenty out there that do care for you! And who appreciate the complexities that make you who you are Muz! Keep on blogging Mr! You're one of my favourite daily reads! :-)

I think people read your blog is because they can drool about you. Hang around like a flock of vultures ready to swoop down for a piece of you.
